Glad we're not still in Melbourne in this heat wave

While suburban temperatures were recorded at about 45 C yesterday, the thermometer on my mum's balcony almost blew the mercury at 47 C! With an overnight temperature of 26 C it was already 36 C by 9am.

Late in the afternoon they relented and finally decided to turn on the air conditioner, only to discover that power shortages had left them without electricity.

Melbourne was today officially in its hottest-known three-day heatwave, after the temperature again broke through the 43 degrees celsius barrier. Today's temperature of 43.8 degrees recorded at 1.52pm (AEDT) marked the first time since records began in 1855 that the city has had three consecutive days above 43.

  1. Hey Nic! I've got to say, coming from far western Pennsylvania, where we are submerged in a deep reeze, and under three feet of snow, 43.8 degrees celcius sounds pretty good to me!!! :)

  2. I know what you mean - we have hardly any snow - it is grey and yuck - I wouldn't mind a couple of days of 40+ - not sure how the kids would cope with it tho. :D

  3. I'm about to move to Sweden from Melbourne and I wished we had left sooner after those string of days. It was worse in Adelaide though apparently.
I hate the heat and those days were awful. Also, because of the water restrictions, our plants suffered a lot.
Thanks for the blog, it's good to see what Sweden is like for an Aussie expat.

  4. Yeah from all accounts it sounds like it has been a bit hard to handle. Mind you I wouldn't mind a day or two of it - I LOVE the intensity of the heat - like sitting in an unrelenting sauna. Wonder how you'll feel about it after you've been here a while.

Glad you are enjoying the blog. Look forward to reading your "now in Sweden" blog! :D
There are lots of aussies here - I have met a ton over the years and they either love it or they hate it. It kind of grows on you! Yell out if you need any specific help.
